Gemalink Deep-sea Port, a key part of Gemadept’s Port-Logistics Ecosystem, has been approved by the Ministry of Construction to receive container vessels up to 232,494.5 DWT. This approval was granted under Decision No. 6183/BXD – KCHT dated July 2, 2025. This achievement reaffirms Gemalink Port’s capacity and demonstrates the continuous efforts of both Gemalink Port and Gemadept in their mission to support and advance the national maritime industry. It also reflects their commitment to creating the region’s largest and most efficient deep-sea port.
Gemalink Deep-sea Port is a joint venture between Vietnam’s Gemadept (75%) and the world-leading French partner, CMA Terminals (25%). Immediately after Phase 1 became operational in January 2021, Gemalink quickly became a source of national pride. It was ranked among the Top 19 leading ports globally capable of receiving today’s largest mega-vessels. Gemalink aims to become one of the most important cargo transshipment hubs in Vietnam and the Asia-Pacific region.
Since being entrusted by the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction) in 2023 to conduct trial operations for vessels with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of up to 232,494.5 DWT (reduced load) for berthing and cargo operations, Gemalink Port has always prioritized safety. To secure this valuable official approval, over the past two years, Gemalink Port has strictly adhered to all directives and coordinated closely with relevant authorities to conduct the trial phase with the utmost caution and safety.
Specifically, Gemalink Port has proactively invested in and installed modern monitoring equipment, including wind measurement systems and speed and berthing angle determination equipment, to assist pilots and captains during ship maneuvers. To enhance the safety of mega-vessels, the Port has strictly adhered to the instructions of the Vung Tau Maritime Port Authority. This involves implementing parallel berthing solutions and utilizing high-maneuverability, large-capacity tugboats (over 3,000 HP) to safely bring ships to berth, minimizing all risks.
Seamless coordination is the key to success. To facilitate this, a 24/7 online information exchange has been established, continuously linking the Port Authority, pilots, towage units, and ship owners. This system ensures constant updates on hydrographic conditions, weather, and berth preparations.
Through its utmost efforts and high sense of responsibility, Gemalink Port has recently ensured the absolute safety of 1,055 vessel calls, including 70 mega-ships with a DWT exceeding 200,000 DWT. This achievement stands as the strongest affirmation of Gemalink’s professional operational capability and its commitment to contributing to the overall safety of national seaport operations.
