2024 marks an important milestone in its 35-year development journey, where Gemadept affirms its strong commitment to ESG goals and sustainable development. Gemadept identifies “Green Creation” as not only a trend but also an urgent requirement, a “compass” for sustainable development. The Company has demonstrated this commitment through strategic actions:
- Building a clear roadmap: Proactively developing and implementing a comprehensive ESG strategy for the 2021-2025 period, and planning a vision to 2030 and aiming for Net Zero by 2050, in line with the Vietnamese Government’s commitments.
- Establish a dedicated ESG Board: To realize this commitment, the dedicated ESG Board, which is headed by the CEO, was established in 2022. Its role is to direct and effectively organize the implementation of ESG tasks across the system.
- Comply with international standards: Aiming to achieve international ESG certifications in 2024 and 2025, especially in activities that ensure occupational safety and health, environmental protection, the inventory and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions, and green port development.

1. Developing Modern Green Port Systems
Gemadept is a pioneer in building and operating ports according to “Green Port” standards, minimizing environmental impact.
- Green Port Certification: Key ports like Nam Dinh Vu, Gemadept Dung Quat Binh Duong, and Gemalink have received Green Port Standard certification from the Vietnam Maritime Administration.
- International Award: Gemadept Dung Quat International Port was honored with the 2024 Asia Green Port Award (GPAS) from the APEC Port Services Network (APSN), recognizing its outstanding efforts in applying clean technology and efficient energy use.
- Equipment Electrification: A large proportion of equipment at the ports uses electricity (up to 95% at the Nam Dinh Vu and Gemalink port clusters), significantly reducing direct emissions.
2. Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Applying Clean Energy
- Greenhouse Gas Inventory: Conducting regular inventories according to the international standard ISO 14064-1, independently verified by the British Standards Institution (BSI).
- Renewable Energy Application: Pioneering in investing in rooftop solar power systems at the SCSC Air Cargo Terminal and Mekong Logistics.
- Digital Transformation for Emission Reduction: Deploying technology platforms like SmartPort, SmartGate (AI), and RiverGate to optimize operations, reduce vehicle waiting times, and consequently lower fuel consumption and emissions.
3. Promoting Green Logistics and Protecting Biodiversity
- Developing Waterway Transport: Actively opening domestic waterway routes (such as the Cai Mep – Mekong Delta route) to reduce the burden on roads, save costs, and decrease emissions.
- Environmental Protection: Implementing practical projects like the “Seed for Sea” mangrove planting program, having planted and nurtured 4,000 trees since 2022.
