06/28/2010

28/Jun/2010, Gemalink Corporation – The Joint Venture Company between Gemadept Corporation and CMA-CGM (French ) held the Contract signing ceremony for Infrastructure construction of Gemalink Cai Mep deep sea container terminal with Dealim – Samwhan (Korean) at Sheraton Hotel, Ho chi minh city.

Cai Mep deep sea port complex (Ba ria – Vung tau) belong to the group 5 of the Government master plan for Vietnam port system development with prime location, very close to the international container service route with favorable natural depth of water without remarkable annual sedimentation. In commercial aspect, Cai mep deep sea port complex is located in an area which concentrates 70% of  container through put in Viet Nam.

Gemalink is the biggest container terminal in this area. Event in the first phase, Its size in already bigger than the size of the 4 neighboring terminal in the full phase. Gemalink Cai mep deep sea container terminal will be begun construction in August, 2010 and operated in 2013.

During this phase a main quay of 800 meters for mother ships and a quay for feeder ships of 260m will be completed on the ground space of 33 ha. The annual capacity of the port is 1.2 million TEUs.

2nd phase completion will be continued after wards with the total area of 72 ha, expanding main quay up to 1,150m and feeder quay up to 370m for the total annual capacity of 2.4 million  TEUs in 2014.

The investment capital for the first phase is USD 300 million including of the cost of LUR.

Gemarlink terminal has some very important competitiveness advantages over the others as following:

  • Location closest to the sea, at the deepest part of river with free ship turning area, comparing to the other upriver terminals.
  • Gemalink terminal has the longest quays of 1,520 m. The 3 neighboring terminals have only 600 m quay in full phase. This factor is very important for container port with the call of large mother ships.
  • Gemalink terminal has dedicated quay for river ship and feeder, offering an easy and cheap connection to HCMC and Mekong Delta comparing to very expensive and troublesome inland transport.
  • Gemalink is the only terminal that has the license for 200,000 DWT vessels. The maximum size of the others is 100,000 DWT. That makes GML terminal is the only terminal for the mega size ships of over 10,000 TEUs capacity, which will be prevailing in Asia - Europe trade in near future.
  • State-of-the-art equipments with the latest design and technology.
  • GML has limit commercial risk in term of cargo base because of call commitment of its shareholders CMA-CGM and Gemadept as shipping lines and also other shipping lines in the same alliance.
